The databases in detail

 

Wharton Research Data Services (WRDS)

Many of the following financial databases are available via the web-based interface of WRDS. Read more on what WRDS is and how to get access to WRDS here.


AMADEUS (Bureau van Dijk)

Contents: AMADEUS is a pan-European financial database containing information on over 18 million public and private companies from 42 countries, including all the EU countries and Eastern Europe. Up to 10 years of detailed information (consolidated statements are also provided when available) comprising 24 balance sheet items, 25 profit and loss account items and 26 ratios. The descriptive information includes: official national identification number, address, telephone, fax, website, legal form, year of incorporation, senior managers, auditors, number of employees, quoted/unquoted indicator, industry and activity codes and, when available, a trade description in the local language and English.

ASSET4 ESG (Thomson Reuters)

Contents: ASSET4 contains data on environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG)  for more than 3,500 global companies with a data history of up to 9 years. 750 data points are collected by Thomson Reuters from companies, news sources, stock exchange filings and non-government organizations and transformed into 280 key performance indicators in four different main areas:

  • Economic performance (client loyalty, performance, shareholders loyalty)
  • Environmental performance (resource reduction, emission reductino, product innovation)
  • Social performance (employment quality, health & safety, training & development, diversity, human rights, community, product responsibility)
  • Corporate governance performance (board structure, compensation policy, board functions, shareholders rights, vision & strategy)

Help: Information on the companies and data covered by ASSET4 can be found in the Extranet of Datastream (click "Extranet" in the Datastream ribbon of Excel).

Access: Access to the database is provided via a Datastream terminal located in the library "Schloss Schneckenhof Süd - BWL" (Business library). Mannheim University research staff can obtain a direct access link. For details please contact Dr. Philipp Schreiber at the Chair of Finance (Prof. Theissen). Important: Access to Datastream is only possible for 2 persons at a time, so acess is scheduled via the Ilias group "Finance Databases"! If the maximum number of users is reached, you will get an error message saying "Maximum users already logged in". Please try again later, then.

COMPUSTAT Execucomp (Standard & Poor's)

Contents: Standard and Poor's Execucomp provides executive compensation data collected directly from each company's annual proxy (DEF14A SEC form). Detailed information on salary, bonus, options and stock awards, non-equity incentive plans, pensions and other compensation items are available.

COMPUSTAT Global
(Standard & Poor's)

Contents: COMPUSTAT Global provides authoritative financial and market data covering publicly traded companies in more than 80 countries, representing over 90% of the world's market capitalization, including coverage of over 96% of European market capitalization and 88% of Asian market capitalization. Hundreds of data items, ratios and concepts and up to 12 years of annual history is included. International data sets have been designed to reflect the varieties of actual reporting practices used across the globe, while allowing for minimal normalization and establishing consistency on an item by item basis.

COMPUSTAT North America (Standard & Poor's)

Contents: COMPUSTAT North America (from Standard & Poor's) is a database of U.S. and Canadian fundamental and market information on more than 30,000 active and inactive publicly held companies. It provides more than 300 annual and 100 quarterly data items of Income Statements, Balance Sheets, Statements of Cash Flows, and supplemental data. COMPUSTAT North America files also contain information on indices, industry segments, banks, market prices, dividends, and earnings.

CRSP (Center for Research in Security Prices)

Contents: CRSP maintains the most comprehensive collection of security prices, return, and volume data for the NYSE, AMEX and Nasdaq stock markets. Additional CRSP files provide stock indices, beta- and cap-based portfolio, treasury bond and risk-free rates, and mutual fund databases. University of Mannheim has currently subscribed to the CRSP stock and indices database.

DAFNE (Bureau van Dijk)

Contents: DAFNE contains financial information on 900,000 German public companies such as balance sheets (502 items), earnings reports (422 items), and key financial ratios for the latest 10 years. The database comprises individual financial statements as well as consolidated financial statements (IAS, GAAP, HGB). Futhermore, you can find information on corporate structure, shareholders, and subsidiaries as well as information and rumors on M&A deals.

Datastream (Thomson Reuters)

Contents: Thomson Datastream’s Global Databases hold time series information for over two million financial instruments, securities and indicators for over 175 countries and 60 markets worldwide, with up to 50 years of historical depth for some series, and over 8,000 different fields, totalling over 100 million time series.

Event Study Metrics

Contents: Event Study Metrics conducts event studies based on individually collected data. The software is not restricted to US-data. The software allows the user to select several settings (estimation method, event date and estimation window, etc.) in order to calculate abnormal returns, buy-and-hold returns or calendar time portfolio returns.

Hoppenstedt Databases

  • Hoppenstedt Banken: information on the 1,100 most important banks in Germany
  • Hoppenstedt Fondsführer: information on all funds registered in Germany
  • Hoppenstedt Firmendatenbank für Hochschulen: information on the most important 300,000 companies and organizations in Germany and contact details from the top management and the middle management
  • Hoppenstedt Verbände, Behörden, Organisationen der Wirtschaft: 25,000 organizations and authorities in Germany or Europe
  • Hoppenstedt Versicherungen: reports for the 500 biggest insurance companies in Germany
  • Leitende Frauen und Männer der Wirtschaft: information on the 56,000 most important German managers.

I/B/E/S

Contents: The Institutional Brokers Estimates System (I/B/E/S) provides consensus and detail forecasts from security analysts, inclusing earnings per share, revenue, cash flow, long-term growth projections and stock recommendations.

Morningstar Direct

Contents: Morningstar Direct provides detailed portfolio holdings, performance track records, flexible currency conversions, cash flow data, and the Morningstar Rating. Leverage the tools across mutual funds, exchange-traded funds, variable annuities, separate accounts, and hedge funds domiciled in North America, Europe, Australia, and Asia, and fully experience the power behind Morningstar Direct.

SDC Worlwide Mergers, Acquisitions & Alliances (Thomson Financial)

Contents: SDC Worldwide M&A provides data regarding worldwide mergers, acquisitions and alliances, and stock repurchases. The data covers approximately 672,000 global M&As from 1985 to the present (data for the U.S. is available since 1979). Corporate stock repurchase programs are recorded from 1994 to the present.

SNL Unlimited (SNL Financial)

Contents: The Unlimited version of SNL comprises financial data, news and analyses for more than 6.500 public and more than 50.000 private companies from the following industries: banking (worldwide), insurance (USA, Canada, Europe) and financial services (USA, Canada).  

Help: After having logged in to the database, scroll down and click the "Help" button in the footer of the web page.

Access: Access to the database is restricted to members of the University of Mannheim and requires personal registration with your University of Mannheim email address via this web page: SNL registraton page. SNL works best with the current version of the Internet Explorer..


Worldscope Global Database

Contents: The Worldscope Global Database is the financial industry’s premier source of detailed financial statement data and profile data on public companies domiciled outside of the United States of America. It also contains complete coverage of US company filings with the Securities Exchange Commission (SEC), with the exception of closed end investment companies.
