2 Software developers in a research project (E 13 TV-L)

The Mannheim University Library offers the positions of 2 Software developers in a research project (E 13 TV-L) starting from now and for a duration of 23 months. Opportunities for part-time employment are available.

The Mannheim University Library works on the research project “Aktienführer II” funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG).
In this project financial yearbooks in print are digitized and the data is extracted for the research in economics. Scientists will then be able to navigate online through corporation profiles of the last 140 years (1870-2017), search in full text and analyze this data to gain new scientific insights.
Moreover, a fine-grained database will be extended to the last 60 years (1956-2017). This will enable researchers to make advanced queries and extensive panel data exports. The necessary workflow will be automated as much as possible and based on the output of several OCR engines as well as newly developed components.
The language in the project is German or English.

Your responsibilities:

  • Software development
  • Further developments and application of scientific methods for OCR
  • Algorithmic extraction of the structured data from the recognized text including tests and adjustments
  • Data normalization, matching, enrichment
  • Database import and tuning
  • Web development, including search and export interfaces
  • Presentation of the project results on conferences and in journals

Required:

  • Master's degree (or comparable)
  • Strong coding skills (proven in reference projects)
  • Problem solving ability, creativity, team player
  • Eager to learn and apply new technologies

Preferred skills:

  • Interest in image processing, document analysis, optical character recognition, text processing
  • Familiarity in Open Source Development
  • Working knowledge of Git and GitHub
  • UNIX shell and scripting languages
  • Know-how in markup and data formats (JSON, XML, YAML, CSV...)
  • Interest in modern deployment and Continuous Integration strategies (Docker, Travis CI...)

  • Schülerinnen und Schüler im Rahmen von BORS oder BOGY, maximal zwei Wochen
