Fläche. Form. Material

Gabriele Dahms, Peter Schnatz und Edgar Schmandt

Exhibition venue: Verwaltungsflur der Universitätsbibliothek
Cooperation partners: Universitätsbibliothek Mannheim, Künstlernachlässe Mannheim

Mannheim University Library, in collaboration with the Künstlernachlässe Mannheim, is presenting the exhibition “Fläche. Form. Material” in the administrative hallway of the University Library.

The exhibition brings together the works of three Mannheim-based artists: Gabriele Dahms (1944–1999), Peter Schnatz (1940–2004), and Edgar Schmandt (1929–2019), who were united not only by a personal friendship but also by their engagement with abstract painting. The focus is on the works of Gabriele Dahms, whose monochromatic color fields from the 1980s onward were shaped by her exploration of Asian religions, particularly Taoism. Materiality and reduced forms play a central role in her work.

The works by Peter Schnatz and Edgar Schmandt complement these perspectives by introducing further facets of abstract painting: While Schnatz worked with geometric forms and gestural painting, Schmandt engaged intensively with material, structure, and serial working methods.

All works are on loan from the Künstlernachlässe Mannheim.
