Since 1965 the European Documentation Centre (EDC) of the University of Mannheim is part of a worldwide information network, which has been set up in the early 1960s by the European Commission. Today there are more than 350 European Documentation Centres in the EU Member States. The purpose of the network is the support of academic study and research on European integration. As of 1 May 2018 EU citizens living or travelling outside the European Union will be able to better benefit from consular protection in case of need, when their EU Member State of origin is not represented in the non-EU country they are staying in.
